Where was my father?

Where was my father
I felt like a hot burning volcano
Ready to erupt, I lived my life,
Without my father, but did I give a fuck?

Where was my father
I felt like a helpless sick fish
At the bottom of the sea, did he leave?
Because of his incompetence or did he leave because of me?

Where was my father
I had to fend for myself
Learn how to tie my shoes, play sports
Or kiss a girl, even learned how to
Open a rubber, all he wanted to do was drink; all he wanted to do was drink
Smoke, get high
And thought he was a love, you were
A coward, wimp, a faggot undercover

Where was my father
When I needed him for a test
When all my dreams were laid to rest
I felt hopeless with pain, like a hard knife in my chest…

Where was my father
When I started to cry, but no tears came down my face
You was a loser and waste
Um, um, um is that victory I taste

Where was my father
When I had a shitty diaper and late night cries
Late night hunger pains, headaches that’s off the chain
I worried my mother half to death, damn near sent her insane

Where was my father
I don’t know where my father was, but I know he is dead
I thought I forgave him a long time ago, but the question is still in my head

Where was my father
So what do I do?
Should I forgive and forget
And stop feeling sorrow that nigga is my past and I continue to strive for tomorrow

Where was my father
So this chapter in my book
About was my father has come to a complete stop
He has a hella drinker but a father um, um, um, I think not

Think outside the “BOX”

Well,
The minute I inform my mind
That there is a ‘Box’ to think out of,
Then there’s a strong possibility
And high probability,
That my mind might find a way
Back to that ‘Box’
Can you imagine
How much energy I’d have to waste
Just to keep my mind
Outside the ‘Box’?
(Yeah- O.K)
How ‘bout
Instead of taking my mind
Outside the ‘Box’
You simply just take the ‘Box’
Outside your mind
Becuz…
In my mind
There is no ‘Box’
There are no angles to come from
Or walls to lean on
There are no floors to walk on
Or celling’s to reach for
 There are no
Doors to open
Windows to crack
Steps to climb
With railings to grab
Naw-
My mind is a U-N-I Verse
With nothing but
Space and opportunity

Do you want to know what’s on my mind?
Close your eyes

Remember

In the state of miser
Burden with stress
Grief and anxiety
Remember the
Happiness, the
Good times
That comforts your soul

Remember life is a blessing
So be ever grateful
Of Allah’s creation
In the harmony of all things

In the state of quandary
Doubtfulness and curiosity
Hold fast remembrance
Of universal law
What you put in life
Depends on your futurity
Remember ever thing
Grows horizontally
In the reach
Seeking perfection

Ever thing has a beginning
And an end – yea!
Only in this physical world
Which will win your
Soul when face
With adversity
This path
The path of righteousness
Is too narrow
For a renegade
Thus my cause
Is baptizing my soul
With purity
From this internal fire
Within my self

In the name of Allah

Bismillah al rahman al Rahim

First and foremost Thank you’ll for coming again
When I walked into the library aand saw you’ll familiar faces
My happiness I could barely hold within
I am so anxious to continue where we left off
It feels good to be able to express myself and by no means do I feel soft
I truly appreciate you’ll concern for us
It’s so sincere
Monday thru Thursday I’m good
I don’t want Friday to come here
What I enjoyed about today’s group was the topics
Love/hate, I firmly believe everything happens for a reason
I call it fate
These poetry groups help me a lot, various
Styles of writing I want to explore
I am able to put my thoughts/feelings together better
O, how I have matured?
When it’s time to write and participate with the group
You’ll encourage me to strive
I am like a turtle
When I come out of my shell, I feel so alive
When I said I was crazy, I partied hard and had fun
What you’ll don’t know about me is before I came to prison
I hustled, smoked, drank, and popped pills
But now I don’t want either one
Being intoxicated
High 24/7 clouded a lot of decisions I made
Then I caught this case and realized in the game of like I got played
All praises is due to Allah he left me a way out
Now when I hear lying witness, false evidence and prosecutorial misconduct I know what they are about
I never would have known what they were on the bricks
My life was a façade
I chased fast money and cute chicks
Now I am away from all the worldly distractions
I have become a dreamer, I think about my sons a lot
Allah willing I meet a female
I hope she is a muslimah
Nothing last forever and sad and true, one thing for sure
Two things for certain I will never forget none of you
I hope the feeling is mutual because after any storm the sun gots to shine
This is a heartfelt poem
I mean every line out of the 5 and half years I have been incarcerated
The nine days I have spent with you’ll have been a blessing
When this group is over
I am gonna miss you all more than before
This is my confession
Thank you all for coming again
I consider you all friends, hopefully when this group is over this isn’t the end!

Moments of Horror

Note: Shane is an author of a poetry book - this poem is one of the ones in the book. -Halima

Cycles of momentary pleasures
Lead me closer to my demise;
I pursue this empty lifestyle
Trying to quiet my inner cries-
But my cries are not satisfied!

Now crumbling under the pressures
Of a world that’s so unwise,
My struggle seems futile
In a world I now despise;
Yet I cannot choose suicide!

While grasping at any measures
That my mind seems to devise,
I attempt to reconcile
This world with all its lies;
God, I’m so petrified!

Why I Cry at Night?

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 4:00 PM: Breaking news – Husband shoots wife killing himself at 3712??? Could that be? No way, she’s not married. Feed up was the very next words spoken. After eating at MCI-H’s favorite good old state food I returned to the dorm. Sitting back in my relax mood the evening mail call was announced E-1-A-22 you have a mail.

Well let me see who loves me today. A note, photo and my monthly allowance awited me:

Hey brother
Happy Valentine’s Day (smiley face)
Just giving you a love
Shoot out. Take care, all is well, see you soon.

Much love
Sis

My soul and spirit are now relaxed my baby is fine.

Thursday morning February 19th, 2009 6 am H-1 Rec Hall waiting to enter the kitchen. Morning news report recap husband shoots wife kills himself at 3712??? What street did he say I asked? I didn’t catch it the voice called back. My sister lives in that area and her address is the same I said. Stop tripping you just heard from her last night (I had to remind myself) relax and enjoy your breakfast.

My soul is dancing like crazy something isn’t right with my spirit. After returning to the dorm I immediately went to the phone and preceded to dial ***-***-**** no answer. Well she gets off at 7:30 I’ll call later.

At 12 noon I decided to call no answer, well my baby is resting. Let me call Jean I’ve told her on more than one occasion she needs someone to stay there with her. She’s getting old and having major health problems, which resulted in her being hospitalized for a couple of days. I’m going to let her have a piece of my mind this time. Hello? – Women I’ve told you – Wayne – Shelle was killed yesterday what? A moment of shock or disbelief I can’t tell. Jean call Dot for me I asked? Her medication prevented her from calling. I’ll talk to you later Jean I must speak with Dot. I called Dot to only hear – your baby is gone – no hello --- how are you doing --- just --- your baby is gone!

At that moment my thoughts and heart went out to the Jenkins family was this the pain, hurt and sorrow they felt when they got the call. Is this the reason why I cry at night?

Jayonce [Jay + Beyonce and combination of their songs - this is funny!]

Excuse me Miss, I think I’ve seen you before
Is it De Ja Vu?
I’m looking for a Bonnie to my Clyde, are you?
Looking for a Soldier too?
I like girls, girls, girls I’m going to keep it real
If we’re crazy in love I’ll pay your bills, bills, bills
I’m not the bug-a-boo type I’ll let you live you see
I’ll give it to you it you’ll cater to me
I’ll never go through your videophone & check your text
But the minute you start telling me you’re irreplaceable
I’m on the next
I want to upgrade you & buy you girl’s best friend
You’re my sunshine & we ride to the very end
I am a survivor, a renegade, with no regrets
I will never change, even when I lose my breath
Whenever you want to talk I am willing to listen
I really want to know you I am on a mission
When you are not in my presence I want to shout
I am going to miss you & that’s the truth
Reasonable doubt!

How can some women hear your plight then come to your aid and assist you in your fight; not caring if you are wrong or right, but dedicating their self by day and by night.

Who are these women with hearts like a preacher our sisters our nieces our Mother Therese.

When heaven sent them as angels in our midst every day is like Christmas and we have no greater gift?

What can be done for these women to repay; how they have touched our lives like flowers in May;
May God keep them safe and in our hearts we pray, honor them with a special holiday.

The Day I Smiled

Yesterday was different day for me – I actually got to SMILE!
Just being around people that I haven’t been around in a while
These people seem so genuine, like they really felt my pain
Like the world I live in and the world they live in – are basically the same….
Did I tell you that I missed, both inside and out
Ever sense yesterday – that’s all I have talked about
If you were to have smiled like I smiled – you could relate
Because that expression – is not often on my face
Me smiling to you – might seem like something smile
But I smiled yesterday – because of yall

Well-tempered friendship

The fires of loneliness
Once filled my life with much distress
And constantly they did suppress
My ever chance at happiness
And truth, I lost all zest for life
And every day was filled with strife
Until, that is the day you came to this place
With tenderness you gace to me
The strength to set my spirit free
And then you showed me lovingly
How wonderful life could be
As our new friendship grow
A joyous feeling will ensure
That our friendship will not repress
Life’s tribulations will not suppress
This well-tempered friendship which we possess
Poured in the fires of this place

It’s been fun

Well as you may notice I don’t really say much
But I want you to know I enjoyed your company and such
It took a lot for you to come and give us your time
You looked at us like people and not just someone who committed crime
I don’t really know you but I am happy to say
That I am glad you decided to give us the time of the day
To show that just because we’re here we are people too
I just wish in this world there were more people like you
Words can’t explain what you have inspired in me
The countless ways you have set my mind free
Thanks for your time and the things you have done
It has been a short journey but it has truly been fun

My anger

When I have yelled in anger
My face turns a blazing red
I have always said something
That I would wish I hadn’t said
When I have lost my temper
I have lost all reason too
I am not proud of nothing
That I angrily do
In my anger I have never done
A good deed or its wise
But things which I know I should apologize
As I look back across my life
All of the thing that I have lost or made
It’s hard to recall anytime
When my anger ever paid

The path of knowledge

A man who remembers the things that he
Shall receive in this world to come
Desiring them with a lover’s passion and Holy mind
But anyone who misses this path will find himself always in trouble
Many have already attempted to rise above the world but their minds are still firmly fixed on it
Knowledge which is to comprehend the reality of something as it truly is certainty
Knowledge is the best thing to act upon.

Nothing else…

Note: Shane is an author of a poetry book - this poem is one of the ones in the book. -Halima

The brightness of your smile
Makes the darkness of my past
Vanish.
All I see is you
My ideal figure of perfection.
How could I be aware of anything else?
When before me stands
My everything…?
Falling deeper into your eyes
I see…
My everything
I see my happiness and laughter
My peace and joy
My completeness and
And my love…
With you standing before me
Nothing else exists…but love.

Reflection

Note: I have yet to come across any poem/piece/prose as powerful as this one - I know, fully, understand when people say "this or that thing was life changing." Thank you for sharing this poem, Diata! - halima

I am the product of my environment
More correctly, I am the product of my era in time

An era that’s 142 years past slavery
50 some odd years from Jim Crowism
And 31 years removed from the days
Of civil rights upheaval

I am an Afrikan
In an European matrix

I am ironically, the breathing testament to
A future normalcy that’s propositioned for…

I am the conflicting spirit of a victory won
Yet the destitute trapping of a generation lost

I am the reflection of a perfect love and a perfect hate

I seen the induction of the C.I.A & F.B.I
Systematically implant crack cocaine as subversive tool
To dwindle the revolutionary flame of the 60s

So I ask have I ever seen love?

I am the generation that first seen the “so called”
Affirmative action laws, which were supposed to have spawned the manifestation of “equal opportunity” in workplace and equal housing.

So should I ask, do I know love?

I am amongst a generation that leads in every major category that favors, and is high on, death.

So must I ask, is it possible for me to know love?

Remember we are just
Reflecting on a perfect love and perfect hate

How can you have morals and values when you are desperate?

How can righteousness be present when death and despair is so imminent?

How can they expect for love to exist, in a vast mass of conflicting emptiness?

Is love prejudice, and only accessible to those who can afford it?

Or is love the rock of those oppressed to lean on so they can maintain and hold on to their sanity and humanity?

Is love perfect and exact?

Or is it a faulty measurement and credit to God’s creative act?

Can I pick and choose who I love, must it be all embracive?

Is love a single characteristic
Or can it have multiple faces
As faces change in and out our relationships?

How can I love and still be so quick to kill?

Reflections of perfect love and hate

I heard a wise old man say
That the creative force talks to the heart and through the power of thought…

Well then if this is true
Then love is the vehicle that transmits the universal energy of man…to man..through

But not just any man
Not the man who’s divulgent in the panoramic scheme
Of man’s exploitation of man

Not the man absent of comprehension life’s cycle in land

Not the man void of obligations to another man free in hand

Not the man who oozes from goose pimples chasing after breastless firls in perverse skirts

Not the man who breathless skeleton treasures the heaven sent devil’s tongue

You know him, the man whose deceptive words carry heart thrilled prasising songs all throughout the four (4) corners causing massive burial zones

Love can’t be for the man, whose first taste of life was cradled in the smoke filled of a crack pipe

Reflection

Love can’t possibly know, the man who likes to touch his step-daughter secretly at night while she’s whispering the Lord’s Prayer

Reflections…

I wonder if love ever known those countless baby bones scattered throughout the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, because that slave destined mother didn’t want hate to overwhelm her loves life

Reflections

I bet you they loved the begging squeal of that pleading nigger bragging from the back of that pickup truck

A perfect love and perfect hate
Reflection

I once visualized love one night over harden
Erection and lustful wet dreams of me beating
The shit out of that judge who sentenced me

Reflections

They say its three (3) types of men in this world
Well, I must have been the fool, because the same wise old man taught me – twice

He said if the creator is spirit
And man is made flesh, then love must sleep with soul on the plane first made manifest

Reflections

Retrospection showed me that I was a slave
Introspection brought to the realm of being re-made…

So like a new born, I take a slap from reality
That awakens me to breath…

Wiping away the fetus membrane, I begin to see a new image

One that’s no longer tainted by pictures
Of beautiful women given lustful thoughts

Or having a hustler’s dreams, trying to make a robbers buck

But now, I see, a positive ways
Knocking down barriers in a hell-like maze

Love is neither helpless nor substance less
But resides on a thin line of ethereal thoughts

Penetrating the psyche of a man who has fought through force-fields of ignorance and heartache

Swiped through myriads of obstacles and stumbling blocks

To arrive at the pinnacles of the creator’s throne

Not any fictitious ottomans in galaxies space less space

But rather the seat of man’s domain
Existing inside the physiological composition
Of conductive activity that arrives you at the cognitive realization that love is UNDERSTANDING

Can’t you finally see
Your reflection

Love is height of understanding

Love is when you no longer under but overstand
Life and reality and your direct correlation in it

Love is that energy and motion vocatively combusting
Within you so that you can do nothing but feel it
But it’s more

Love is conscious awareness
Aware enough to know that you must consciously embody the righteous principles of life as they culminatively co-exist synchrinizedly
To produce, cultivate, nurture and perpetuate

What?
Life!

Life as the multitude of lessons which constitute one lessons

Love

Reflections

Love is immaculate with much splendor

Suspended in a vortex of blocked perceptions
Love is explicitly clear

Transparent to the eye
But yet so easy to see
Reflections

Love is perplexing to those restricted to just their five (5) tentacle-like senses…

But truly, spiritually enthralling to the few
Who allow their cognitive minds?
To absorb it’s heart-shattering
Truth

Love is as love does
Because you see you do
As far as your conscious overstanding
Of life, reality, existing
Allows you to do

So, in the end all you really have to do is reflect and you

Will now

Love

Reflections

The Creator

On those days when light is overwhelming every corner of my life, my earth, my time and my mind.
Every aspect of my existence becomes clear – without despair, without fear.
I am here to be the Lord, the Governor, the God and King to bring harmony, rule and order to this thing.
The heavens and the earth; the solar system; the galaxy, the universe must submit in order to survive and prosper in it.
Eternity is mine in endless space a paradise where time and boredom has no meaning in this place.
I see all, I hear everything. I’m everywhere and I know all things; I issue a command and the angels sings.

“YOUNG-BLACK-AND JUST DON’T GIVE A FUCK”

How is it that “his” condition was never his decision? Yet, “his” decision to morph “his” condition was placed in the realm of unjust obstacles posed by corruptive mentalities, thriving beneath the shadows of justice. Well, what “they” consider justice; what “they” consider freedom; what “they” define as equality must be an understanding manipulated by the core of immoral, foreign substance diluting every principle uplifting humanity. It’s a shame that every step taken on a righteous path, striving for a life of serenity, is shoved off balance by the force of disruptive will.

Young: Responsible for a crime before you’re even considered mature enough to consume alcohol. Fifteen (15) to nineteen (19) years old swallowed by the penal system, provided with a cardboard box full of state fabric and a promise that freedom will not exist for at least the next ten (10) to twenty (20) years of your life. No instruction, no guidance, no help. Just instincts developed from the scorching concrete of survival. And to top that off, a consubstantial blame is tossed upon your character because you will leave prison the same way you came in – with a cardboard box and a promise that freedom doesn’t exist. And “they” wonder why he “just doesn’t give a fuck.”

Imagine life in the eyes of a child whose only concern is to provide food, clothing, and shelter for his family and himself. Imagine life through the mind of a child who has seen reality posed naked, when his world was supposed to be envisioned from the elements of his imagination. Instead, his only dream is survival by any means necessary. What is there to care about when it feels like no one else cares?

Consider this: You’re born into poverty. Everything that most people, in your society, take for granted is essential in your life. The circumstances that “they” seem to misunderstand has been the struggle that you’ve been living. This confusion of your life has impelled “them” to retract the hand you’ve been reaching for. So, what do you do? Do you continue to search for some form of assistance, hoping there is still a fragment of chance left in humanity? Or, do you do what you have to do in order to survive in a society refusing to acknowledge your existence?

Of course, it might be wise to choose the latter. Otherwise, you abandon your destiny to the possession of someone who, apparently, doesn’t have your best interest at heart. Insanity would have to envelope your mind before you can allow such a destructive act to occur. In order to truly understand this, you have to become completely conscious of the political realm fueled by sadistic capitalism – yea it’s all about money! And when you derive from an environment where the abundance of monetary wealth is rare, subsequently, the expectations of your success is extremely limited. No one expects you to make it out of the bowels of suppression; no one believes that you will ever escape a maze of contradictions and overzealous simplicities. As crazy as it sounds, it makes perfect sense.

Education is the capacity to overcome obstacles posed by life” (Ernesto “Che” Guevara.)  In order for a ruling class to sustain the prowess of its current position, there has to be a, purposely, less educated, inferior class established in their social system. Life is a duality and one cannot exist without the other.  Say, for instance, everyone did make it out of the “hood,” what would distinguish bourgeoisie from proletarian? Where would we draw the line between “us” and “them”? Who will have the influence of governance over the land? Who would have the power?

So, when you consider “him” to be a menace to society, you are absolutely right. The foundation of “his” society has been groomed, tragically, by the deceptive ingredients produced by man. Realize that the blood of “his” ancestors boils within “his” veins. “His” DNA has absorbed the essence of resistance. Conformity towards righteousness is the war within “his” soul. Battles between peer pressure and individuality; intelligence and instincts; necessities and desires are fought with the inclination of self-improvement and self-awareness amongst sincerity. Now that “he” has become politically conscious to the magnitude of his condition, “he” has become the sagacious enmity that “they” fear.

So, don’t criticize him because he’s “Young.” Don’t discourage him because he’s “Black.” Understand that he “JUST DON’T GIVE A FUCK,” behind the mere fact that you will blame “him” because he’s “Right.”

“Now that I’m grown, I got my mind on being something. Don’t want to be another statistic out here doing nothing… “Tupac A. Shakur

A Breath From Heaven (My Angels)

Welcome back to what?
A cost containment day what the f___
Yeah I thought you would agree
Yet My Angels took the time to set me free
For a few hours (at least) A Breath from Heaven, this has to be!
To be or not to be that is the question?
Well, I guess I’ll be
Being me it’s hard as hell you see
Caring the spirit de corps of Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha & Confucius, man its difficult at times
Being the God-Man of today, is one hell of a fine
Living in a corrupt system that says you’re guilty as sin
Daring you to rise again
But like the phoenix from the ashes “here I go again”
The beat goes on because the beat is strong
Elevating my thoughts, increasing my soul 32 years later now the truth can be told
Allah is great, Allah is good sending these beautiful Angels (Kris, Yamu, Halima & Anna) so I will know
A breath from Heaven, yeah that’s cool…
