Poem of the Week # 1 *Imagine that*
In the concrete and steel, who would have thought,
A rose would spring forth, such value, such worth.
Cast out, but not forgotten,
Root were formed though the soil was rotten
A rose would spring forth
Such value, such worth
Rampant mistrust and dreams deferred
Still hope was alive and love nurtured
The rose sprang forth, radiant and alive
A few thrones here and there, but it was destined to survive
A rose sprang forth in the concrete and steel
Value and worth and beauty surreal

Secrets
Let me find out that
You really do care about people,
that you know the meaning of
faith, hope and love
let me find out that you cry tears
of remorse, regret and that kindness
is not just an appropriate emotion for lames,
but a real expression of friendship.
Let me find out that MOM's SON is really
a sucker for the underdog, a shoulder to lean on
I knew it all along but I never dared to
share the information, to much was at stake,
the legend of Timmie Poole, aka, Big Boy
Who to a select few was really lucky all the time
A paradox, a contradiction in terms, a friend
Who sticks closer than a brother
the truth is finally revealed
In actuality, Big Boy is,...............Momma's Boy!!

Epitaph
New Jack City is what he said,
I didn't understand.
Thirty (30) years later, it's a state of mind.
Getting rich, leaving principles behind.
Money and dames, all part of the game
Call it like you see it, they all were lames.
Love the blind? You pay a price
30 to life sure ain't nice.
New Jack City, a mind set you see
Hustling, getting DOE, "How it used to be."
Prisons are full of dudes from set,
Parole denied, no not yet!!
You clap and enjoy, yell, "kill the pigs."
Truth be toild, the dude was a rat....
New Jack City to Boyz in the Hood,
Black drama depicted, but few who really understood.
Sons and daughters, absentee fathers,
Holding it down, it really don't matter.
Smell the coffee, it's getting late
Death don't have an expiration date.
Bend over, spread 'em, ain't you tired,
Justice is blind, don't even try her.
Too anxious to fail, let impatience rule,
Your headstone will read, "Here lies a Fool!!!"

Haikus from Mike Perry
Build a prayer,
from a prison cell,
the depth of love,
I know so well.
Momma said, no not yet
to a whispered regret.
In shallow minds words erode,
small packaged dreams seldom
EXPLODED.
Touch a memory
back space erase
10 to 30, what a waste.

L.I.F.E (Love Invokes Faith Everlasting)
Written for Lucky and Wayne
So many friends with a letter, Life,
It is what it is, but it sho aint nice
Death by increments, no parole, the Doc plan.
We can rap it or rhyme it, but who'll lend a hand?
Who'll put some flowers on Ms Flossy's grave?
Who'll teach Lil Momma how to behave?
Who'll take a grandchild shopping for school?
Or even apply the Golden Rule?
Life, who really cares?
Words are cheap and seldom true,
But love speaks volumes, you know what to do,
Procrastinate, prevaricate,
Posthumous accolades? Please, give me a break
Dudes be faking, lames galore
Youth be still, elders to the fore
Usher a generation thru freedom's door
Stop spitting idle rap, united we can do much more
Call it like you see it champ
Homeless spoken words, abandon like a tramp
Eyes wide open yet we're still sleeping.
We say we're conscious, huh, our ancestors are weeping.
Bake a cake and light the candles, the birth of a new day.
God is the Judge, He has the final say.
From prison to the promised land. Let the whole world know.
Tell Pharoah, "Let my people GO!!"

Show some love
The bang-bang theory is prevalent today
Body count rising, in shallow grave they say.
Countless young men, no sense of purpose
Rampant crime, totally remorseless
Hatred, mistrust, fences need to mend.
Discuss, pontificate, elucidate on end
Sale words is all, no one would bend.
Missing the forest to concerned with the trees
Strain out a gnat but swallow a camel!!
Who has an ear to really listen?
Truth be told, love is missing!!
Conscious we say?? Our ancestors are weeping
Our demise is calling tenuously creeping
Who has an ear to really listen??
Truth be told, love is missing!!
Today is a new day “together, we can!!”
With love as the foundation, we can heal the Lord.

Building for tomorrow
If this is life, I am not living it
Too much pain, sadness, alone, I just ain’t feeling it
Bad choices I made ‘em, the debt I’m paying it
Still I find peace in the concrete and steel
Can’t take my joy or my love because it’s real
Real in the friends I see each day
Real in my family, they’re here to stay
Real cause I know we’re finally arrived
The hand of the free and home of the brave?
Life behind bars cause I wouldn’t behave
A statue called liberty is a fraud to me
She’s lying through her teeth, a land of poverty
Poverty of faith, hope and love
Poverty in trust and all the above
Happiness found in a small child’s smile
Happiness in freedom through I took awhile
Happiness in a hug, an embrace from friend
Pastoring life, renewing liberty, happiness being a friend of a friend

Happiness is...
My salutation read, “You can write my epitaph Happiness death by OD – 134-307.”
Bank robber, drug addict, not a recipe for heaven.
What can wash my sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus?
What can make me whole again….
Time equals significance, 36 years, 18 years,
Too many years masking too many tears, revealing too many fears.
Tears and fears entwined in my words:
“When I’m sad alone and all seems lost,
I think of my freedom and how much it will cost.
I think of my parents and how they must feel,
To see me in prison and know it is for real.
I know it is my fault and now I must pay,
But help me dear God I have something to say.
Iambic pentameter circa’72
I know she will be back and I hope that she is found
Love is better the second time around
I keep saying she will be back.
Today again I lied.
120-138, no deliverance, no light, seeds were planted,
It is getting late.
Lucky my man, why don’t you write.
I’m on Death Row, might not make it through the night.
Pity the man minus love in his life and no hope in sight.
Three all beef patties, pickles, onions, on a sesame bun,
Where did that come from?
Courtyard, life, I’m suffocating, run, run, run.
If both of us are talking, who’s listening?
To the sound of our whispered aches and pains
To the sound of “Our father who art in heaven hallowed by thy name.”
What can wash away my sings nothing but the blood….
What can make me whole again….
Home again, family, free at last,
I was the problem it wouldn’t last.
Fringe benefits, trappings galore,
After six months, the future seemed secure.
Unresolved issues surfaced on night.
Didn’t mean to say it…Thank God there was no fight.
I’ll always love my mom she’s my favorite girl…
Papa was a rolling stone, spent most of his time
Chasing women and drinking
Built up animosity/hatred wrapped up in euphemism – dad.
We were both sad.
He couldn’t say love, much less show it…
To my mother, me to no one but…..
It wasn’t her fault; she loved us and tried to insure that our needs were met
She wasn’t our mom, but she loved us like one.
I will always love my Mom…
Papa stopped rolling, but he was still stone cold.
Plans aborted by a dye packet that exploded
Makes me wanna holler and throw up both my hands.
Who is willing to try?
To save a world that is destined to die,
Children today, really suffer tomorrow.
Oh, what a shame such a bad way to live.
Too proud to cry so I might as well try
To put in words how I really feel.
I talk about lames ‘cause that was me,
Give me a pencil and paper to write all the things
Say all the things I should have said before, I love you!!!
Did so much faking could’ve won an award,
No more questions I can’t answer, no more apologies for the things I didn’t do.
No more outburst of tears that I can’t kiss away
Just playing the greatest role of my life 134-307
Give myself a standing ovation, a legend in my own mind
Slip, counter, double up the hookm
Throw ever punch that’s in the book but a loser in life and all that matters
New saw the forest, there were too many tears
If a tree fell in the forest and no one was there
Would it make a sound??
A legacy in words is a difficult task
Look in the mirror and remove the mask
See St. Gabriel’s, President of the class
10th grade expelled, it wouldn’t last
Don’t look away, the mirror don’t lie
Uncried tears and bloodshot eyes
Read between the lines, the words not spoken
You’ll uncover a legacy, a life that was broken
A masterpiece, designed by the Master
In spite of myself, I avoided a disaster.
The truth is not what you really see,
MO says Bank robber, addict but that is not me!
Pontificate, punctuate, procrastinate, prevaricate, please elucidate – HELP!
Without the cold, desolation of winter, there couldn’t be the warmth and splendor of spring.
Life minus Melanie will mean no ring, ring, ring….Hello!!
Best man, maid of honor, rice, bouquets, the whole nine yards
Michelle Imani, the child of promise.
Laughter and joy, my life complete.
I am falling….up, yo and away.
EXTRA – EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT!!
The legacy was right…The legacy was right.
My name is written in the Lamb’s book of life.
I broke the mold and found streets paved with gold.
Amen & Amen!!

From Darkness to your marvelous light
I realize my error and change my fate
Striving to obtain an elusive desire
I repent for being a gun for hire
Changing my behavior was a difficult test
Finally I have laid my past to rest
On the phone last night my daughter was crying
“you said you’d be home, I knew you were lying”
The glitter and bling aren’t worth this
I’ve wasted too much, much that I miss
So I’ll just stop faking and give up this fight
Integrity and truth:
From darkness to your marvelous light
